Born into a small village of sailors and fishermen, magic was not something passed down through her family. This isn't to say that there weren't mages: there were a few, but even they could only teach the rowdy girl so much before they realized that she'd exhausted their collective knowledge by the time she was thirteen. They also weren't enough to save their village from the ravages of war.

At the age of fifteen, Uzumaki Kushina, along with the small handful of other survivors became refugees seeking a new home in Konoha. She had no remaining family to speak of, having been an only child and losing both of her parents in that last battle. But she was independent and had a new, larger village full of mages to learn from, an opportunity that she took full advantage of. She met Namikaze Minato on that first day in Konoha, as she ordered him to take the belongings of an elderly refugee (he was supposed to be helping after all), though, as she'd never bothered to introduce himself, much less acknowledge him further, she wouldn't know just who she'd been bossing around until years later.

As the years passed, her friendship/rivalry with Minato grew and slowly shifted into something more. There were many that she had formed lasting bonds with, but none that knew her or understood her like Minato. She was 21 when they finally married, and her quietly held dreams of a family came closer to reality with the news of her pregnancy soon after. Minato was slated to be named Archmage and by fall she would be able to hold their son in her arms (and go back to ignoring the well-meaning healers who hounded her every step). The arrival of the kyuubi changed all of their carefully made plans though.

They had been desperate to find another solution, anything but what they did. But in the end, it took all of her will to hand her newborn son to her husband, knowing all of the possible outcomes of his proposed spell. She'd known that it would have been a miracle for either of them to survive, but when the council members came to where she was still recovering from the long, exhausting birth, and informed her that Minato was dead and her son, now host to the terrible beast that had nearly destroyed the village, would not be returned to her, she broke.

Had she been in her right mind, she likely wouldn't have gone to the lengths that she did that night. By the time that a healer came to check on her the next morning, Kushina had already left Konoha, leaving almost perfect doppelgangers of herself and Minato, to appear as their lifeless bodies. She'd been unable to even get near Naruto, as heavily guarded as he was, but she'd claimed her husband's body. She worked one of the most vulgar of spells possible, something that would have, at the very least, gotten her banished from any mage society. She bound Minato's soul back into his body and brought him back to life. In the working, she'd been stripped of her gifts and pushed her body, still weak from childbirth and her escape, to collapse. The Minato that she awoke to a few days later looked exactly as he had before, but his personality had changed, his spirit lacking the spark she'd always known.

They've moved countless times in the years since, as soon as someone suspected that something was not quite right with the couple. Minato is unchanging as the effects of time run their normal course over Kushina. Eighteen years after Minato's death and Naruto's birth, Kushina is finding it harder to keep running and to stay away from the son she longs for, finding the reward of her freedom not worth the cost.
